When discussing laser hair removal types, the differences between Alexandrite lasers, Diode lasers, Nd:YAG laser and Ruby lasers is a trivial topic to the majority of the public, but the choice between them will mean the difference between an amazing and flawless laser hair removal experience, and a horrible, scarring procedure. Different types of laser are available for different skin types and randomly selecting a certain method that may not be right for you can result in pain, burns, scarring and discoloration. The types of laser listed below are the most common laser hair removal systems available.

A Ruby laser (694 nm wavelength) is one of the most commonly used laser types. The shorter wavelength often produces side effects, with pigmentation changes being the most common. One benefit of using a Ruby laser is that it is proven effective at very long term laser hair removal. The laser equipment uses a cooling unit to reduce burn chances and the procedure is quite pain free but it has a slower repetition rate meaning that treatment time is longer than with other methods.

Using an Alexandrite laser (755 nm wavelength) is the fastest method of hair removal available to the consumer. The enhanced speed means that it is good for treating body areas with more surface area to cover, such as the legs. The Alexandrite laser is a great choice for people with close to white skin colors but a poor choice for anyone with darker skin tones.

Diode lasers on the other hand (800-810 nm wavelength) provide a longer wavelength of light in order to allow for a much more secure and controlled operation. This is because the laser is able to penetrate deep into the patient's skin. The deeper penetration allows the doctor to concentrate on the thinner hair follicles for a more thorough procedure. People with black and brown hair will see the most positive effects - it is not recommended for people with light hair.

The ND:Yag laser (1064 nm Wavelength) is available to the broadest range of skin tones. Most other laser types are only suitable for pale skin but the Nd:YAG laser is also suitable for darker skin including African-American skin tones. The downside to this procedure is that it is much more painful because the longer pulse length means it penetrates deeper into the skin.

Choosing the right method for you shouldn't be about which is the quickest or cheapest, but about making sure you are not at risk for side effects. For example, people with dark skin are more prone to side effects and therefore should be more likely to choose the Nd:YAG laser option. Discuss the possible laser hair removal types with the clinic and ensure that the practitioner carrying out the treatment has a lot of experience using the chosen laser type for your skin tone.
