Malarone tablets are an anti-malarial medication manufactured by GlaxoSmithKline that uses a proguanil/atovaquone combination to prevent or treat malaria. Malaria is a disease that is widespread in South America, Southern Asia and Africa, and is caused by certain species of parasites living in the gut mosquitoes. These parasites enter the human body when they are injected into the blood stream after a mosquitoe bite. Malarone tablets function by interfering with the parasitic growth in the red blood cells of our bodies.

Malarone contains two anti-malarial agents - proguanil hydrochloride and atovaquone. The first is a white crystalline substance and the latter a yellow crystalline substance. Both are only sparingly insoluble in water. The active ingredients in Malarone tablets include:
• Low-substituted poloxamer 188
• Magnesium stearate
• Povidone K30
• Sodium starch glycolate
• Microcrystalline cellulose
• Hydroxypropyl cellulose

You must not take Malarone tablets if you are allergic to either proguanil or atovaquone. The drug is also not recommended if you are suffering from a kidney disorder. It is imperative you consult your GP before taking Malarone tablets if you suffer from kidney disorders, depression, mental illness or epilepsy. If you are pregnant or planning on becoming pregnant you must let your doctor know. It is still being researched but Malarone tablets could cause harm to your unborn foetus and can also pass into breast milk causing harm to a nursing baby.

There can be some possible side effects when taking Malarone tablets:
• Difficulty sleeping
• Headaches
• Stomach problems
• Muscle fatigue
• Hard stools

If you take Malarone tablets properly, you can safely tour malaria infested zones, examine ruins of ancient cultures and explore the rain forest without fear of contracting the dreaded disease.

Contact your doctor at the earliest possible time if you feel feverish or experience symptoms that are generally associated with Malaria. This is especially important if you have been to a Malaria prone place. In some cases the infection may take a while to spread and you may not experience symptoms straight away. Prevention is always better than cure so do make sure you visit your GP in the case of any uncertainty.

You can purchase Malarone tablets from your local pharmacy. If you want to do this online I suggest you visit www.xpresspharmacy.co.uk. You can also fill out a Malaria enquiry form on the site if there is anything you are unsure about.
