Can You Really Build a Fishing Boat?

By: Francis Drake | Mar 31 2010 | 367 words | 939 hits

If you are reading this article on the web, you are, in all probability, toying with the idea of building yourself a fishing boat. There is no better way to pass the time than go fishing in lazy summer afternoons. For me, it has great memories of bonding with my brother and the pride with which we showed our catch to our father. And if you are fishing in a boat that you have made yourself, believe me, the catch won't matter for quite some time!Â

There are two basic ways of going about building your own boat - buying a boat kit or going the whole nine yards. Yes, I'm talking about building from scratch. A boat kit will be cheaper and will consume less time. You will be able to get online support from the supplier. Me? I'm not a buy-and-assemble kind of person. I like making a project out of it. What I learnt in woodwork class at school beats simply putting together machine made parts .Â

Boat plans/designs are freely available online. As are lists of materials and tools that you will require. For this activity, I'd prefer a flat bottomed skiff. Once you have your worktable ready, the moulds are the first to go up. These will support the stem, transom and side planks. You might want to coat the bottom of the boat with epoxy resin for durability. Now the boat can be turned upside down, add the frames and seats. You can add a motor or go powerless - your choice. The stern can accordingly be made to accommodate the outboard motor. The paint is the last job to be done.Â

And now, I hope your catch is good enough for your boat!

Finally you must remember that decent boat design software helps you to build the boat of your dreams.

Probably the best idea is to get some sort of 3D boat design software that is affordable, easy and flexible to use and is suitable for anyone from the hobby model boat builder to professional mass ship producers.
