4 types of Metal Wheel Finishes

The finishing on the rim of your metal wheel is a very important consideration during metal wheel purchase. There are different wheel finishes and each comes with its advantages. You should know about each and choose the one that suits you best depending on your taste, where you drive and the kind of work you do.
The major metal wheel finishes include;
Chromed finish
The process of achieving a chromed wheel finishing is called chrome plating. It helps maintain the original look of the vehicle but at the same time improving its entire outlook. Chrome plating is important in that it strengthens the material that makes up metal wheels, giving it a desirable look that is not easy to duplicate. The coating is resistant to rust and corrosion. A chrome coating also has the ability to bear up extreme temperatures. Therefore, this type of finishing is suitable for people who drive in high temperature areas.
An example of a wheel with a chrome finish is Metal alloy wheel MO961 Chrome

Polished Finish
Polished wheels do not have a finish applied on them. What happens to them is that they are highly polished. This process involves smoothening the surface of the alloy. The smooth surface is then polished using a polishing compound that gives it a shiny appearance. The advantages of a polished finish are that since no materials are added, the weight of the metal wheel remains the same. This leaves the wheel light thus ensuring high speed on the vehicle with such wheels. Another benefit is that when the shiny surfaces become dull, they can be polished again. You do not have to go back to the shop to buy new wheels.

Painted finish
For a painted finish, the wheel is painted in a certain color and then a clear coating applied on top. The clear coating is applied to keep away air and water and prevent corrosion. Most wheels are painted in shades of silver, black or white while others are painted in the same color as the color of the vehicle. This process is sometimes referred to as Powder coating. An example of a metal wheel with a painted finish is Metal Alloy Wheel MO951 Black.

Machined/ Clear Coated
This finish is where the wheel is polished and then a clear coating applied on them. This is done to prevent corrosion and rust by creating a water resistant surface. This process makes it easier to take care of the wheels. It's easy to clean them and maintain them. An example of a machined metal wheel is MO960 Gloss black Machined metal alloy wheel.

Make sure that you choose the right wheel with the right finishing avoiding disappointment. You can view some of these wheels at Moto Metal Wheels page where the above examples come from. Do the driving and let your wheels do the talking!
